Cai Guo-Qiang Blows Up a Tree on the National Mall

Tree Explosion 3326

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (third image down, left side) blew up a pine tree in front of the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Gallery on the National Mall this afternoon.  I expected the tree to disintegrate, but it appeared completely undamaged.  Black ash surrounded the nearby area after the explosion.
